About the Author and Illustrator

Constance Taylor

Constance Taylor is an Alaska commercial fisherman who grew up to be a publisher, photographer, and author. Midnight's story actually occurred on Constance's move to Alaska in 1963.

Daniel Marhuenda is a graphic designer and illustrator from Barcelona, Spain. He specializes in illustration for children, and he gets his inspiration from nature and literature. Northern Lights Glossary

Atmosphere – the layer of gases that surround Earth and is held in place by gravity

Aurora – A display of colored lights in the sky caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North and South Poles. In Latin, Aurora means "dawn"

Borealis – a Latin word meaning "northern"

Australis – a Latin word meaning "southern"

Electron – a subatomic particle with a negative electric charge

Solar winds - a stream of charged particles released from the upper atmosphere of the Sun Magnetic field – sometimes called the geomagnetic field, the Earth's magnetic field is created by the rotation of the Earth and the Earth's core. It extends from the Earth's interior out into space and shields the Earth against harmful particles in space.
