Tall Tales of Alaska: Juneau AK: A Quaint Alaska Town with a Gold Mining Problem

Treasure

Is there sunken treasure in the channel?

As the story goes, the SS Islander was claim to fame, it was entrusted with one of the largest shipments of gold the world had ever seen—roughly $6 million in gold from the Klondike being transported southward.

But, as I’m sure you’re aware, we all know what happens to “unsinkable” ships. They sink. And that is exactly what happened to the Islander. The ship struck an iceberg or rock while sailing past Admiralty Island, which is visible from Juneau, and succumbed to the icy waters in less than twenty minutes.

Learn more about the treasure by listening to the tale.
